Marked improvement of heart failure upon adequate titration of continuous positive airway pressure in a patient with obstructive sleep apnea.

چکیده
Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is frequently present in heart failure (HF), and it may take the form of obstructive (OSA) and central (CSA) sleep apnea. The use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with OSA and HF is associated with an improved neuroendocrine profile and cardiac function. The degree of upper airway obstruction and the airway closing pressure (and the PAP pressure used to relieve it) may all be highly variable in a setting of uncontrolled HF, mostly due to variable airway oedema. We present a case of a man with HF whose cardiac symptoms radically improved after adequate treatment of his OSA with an auto-adjusting PAP device.

This paper reviews the efficacy of auto-titrating continuous positive airway pressure (APAP) for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. It is based on a review of 30 articles published in peer review journals conducted by a task force appointed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to develop practice parameters for use of APAP devices for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The data...

Introduction: Non-REM parasomnias are a relatively common condition in the general human population. Current treatment plans are usually based on small case series and reports. Considering the effects of sleep disorders on different aspects of human life and the failure of pharmacological treatments in this field, the present study was designed to investigate a case of this sleep disorders with...
متن کاملFactors Affecting Patients’ Adherence to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Disorder: A Multi-Method Approach
Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard therapy for treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) disorder. However, patients’ adherence to its regular use is poor. The present study aimed to determine the adherence rate to CPAP therapy by identifying factors affecting its regular use and its associated problems and discomforts among a sample population in Mashhad (...

In some conditions continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BIPAP) therapy alone fails to provide satisfactory oxygenation. In these situations oxygen (O2) is often being added to CPAP/BIPAP mask or hose. Central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are often present along with other chronic conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseas...
